NGC 2261, имеющая около одного светового года в поперечнике и удаленная от нас на 2500 световых лет, была изучена астрономом Эдвином Хабблом в начале прошлого века, и теперь это загадочное космическое облако более известно как переменная туманность Хаббла. Так что же заставляет туманность Хаббла меняться? NGC 2261 состоит из пылевой отражательной туманности, расходящейся веером от звезды R Моноцеротис. Основное объяснение изменчивости состоит в том, что плотные скопления затемняющей пыли проходят вблизи Луны и отбрасывают движущиеся тени на пылевые облака в остальной части Переменной туманности Хаббла.
