Возможно, и нет, но по чистой случайности очертания этого молекулярного космического облака повторяют очертания штата Калифорния, США. Наше Солнце находится в рукаве Ориона Млечного Пути, всего в 1000 световых годах от туманности Калифорния. Классическая эмиссионная туманность, также известная как NGC 1499, имеет длину около 100 световых лет. На представленном изображении наиболее заметным свечением туманности Калифорния является красный свет, характерный для рекомбинации атомов водорода с давно потерянными электронами, которые были отброшены (ионизированы) энергичным звездным светом. Наиболее вероятной звездой, испускающей энергичный звездный свет, который ионизирует большую часть газа туманности, является яркая, горячая, голубоватая звезда Xi Персея, расположенная справа от туманности. Туманность Калифорния, которая является обычной целью для астрофотографов, можно увидеть в широкоугольный телескоп под темным небом в созвездии Персея, недалеко от Плеяд.
