Пояснение: Что бы ни ударило по Мимасу, оно почти уничтожило его. То, что осталось, — это один из крупнейших ударных кратеров на одном из самых маленьких круглых спутников Сатурна. Анализ показывает, что при чуть более сильном ударе Мимас был бы полностью уничтожен. Огромный кратер, названный Гершелем в честь сэра Уильяма Гершеля, открывшего Мимас в 1789 году, занимает площадь около 130 километров и представлен здесь. Малая масса Мимаса создает поверхностную гравитацию, достаточную для того, чтобы создать сферическое тело, но достаточно слабую, чтобы обеспечить такие относительно большие размеры поверхности. Мимас состоит в основном из водяного льда с небольшой примесью камня, поэтому его точно описывают как большой грязный снежный ком. Представленный снимок был сделан во время самого близкого в истории пролета космического аппарата-робота «Кассини» мимо Мимаса в 2010 году, когда он находился на орбите вокруг Сатурна.
